Here's what's new in this release:

  • A configurable toolbar has been added with dropdown widgets for colour,
    brush, and brush settings.
  • Floating tool windows can now be docked into a
    sidebar inside the main window.
  • A "Lock Alpha" mode has been added for
    brushstrokes
  • There are now some basic layer compositing modes
  • Mouse and stylus buttons can be bound to different actions via the preferences
  • There's a new scratchpad tool which can be used for thumbnails, notes, or
    recording brushstrokes and colour choices.

Finally, there have been
numerous little improvements and bugfixes to MyPaint's speed, user
interface, and its brush collections.

Download MyPaint (only the sources, at the moment)
(and yes, there will be an updated windows build - as far as I know, that is ;) )

Many thanks to the developers of this great piece of software. I wish Gimp and Inkscape would adapt the simplicity of your user interace. Docking/undocking of dialogs is just as it should be. Drawing just feels right. The tool never gets into the way.

THANKS for this great software!

The Lock Alpha feature of the brush is useful (in fact more than just welcomed, I WAS WAITING FOR IT!), however I do hope that it can be improved to depend on the arrangement of layers, something that Photoshop and a certain drawing program (Paint Tool SAI) has an advantage on this (probably some others do have it too).

E.g.: You put a set of colors on one layer., then you make a new layer on top of it and use Lock Alpha to paint on it, which ensures any changes you make on that layer is only visible on the non-transparent areas defined by the previous layer.

Hi, just wanted to ask a few things concerning mypaint.
Ever since I downloaded the new version when it came out it was working very well for me, but recently these couple of days I was drawing something on it for a contest entry, and MyPaint started acting slow, so I saved the picture as to not loose the work. Then after I saved it started being difficult to close the program, becoming very slow, and well after it closed. I went to look at my work by opening it in windows gallery, and the picture I worked so hard on does not want to open in any program, including MyPaint. What should I do? I really want to finish my contest picture, but it tells me it can't open in programs because it has no file type, and can not be supported... :(

MyPaint is one of the best free programs I've ever used. "My WishList": I think they should add a "symmetry" / mirror tools like the art programs "Alchemy", and SketchBook have. I also think it would AMAZING if they took MyPaint + Pencil 0.4.4b , and put then together to make the best free 2D animation program .

Depending on your operating system, chances are it might or might not be fully supported yet.

If it's Linux, last I checked (with a Wacom Bamboo Pen, which is the same as yours sans the touch function, stylus eraser and pad buttons), most Linux distributions don't have a driver for it yet in the kernel (though I'm basing that statement for an Ubuntu machine I was running at work), but as for now I haven't had any idea if they already rectified that.
