Here's what's new in this release:

  • A configurable toolbar has been added with dropdown widgets for colour,
    brush, and brush settings.
  • Floating tool windows can now be docked into a
    sidebar inside the main window.
  • A "Lock Alpha" mode has been added for
    brushstrokes
  • There are now some basic layer compositing modes
  • Mouse and stylus buttons can be bound to different actions via the preferences
  • There's a new scratchpad tool which can be used for thumbnails, notes, or
    recording brushstrokes and colour choices.

Finally, there have been
numerous little improvements and bugfixes to MyPaint's speed, user
interface, and its brush collections.

Download MyPaint (only the sources, at the moment)
(and yes, there will be an updated windows build - as far as I know, that is ;) )

Many thanks to the developers of this great piece of software. I wish Gimp and Inkscape would adapt the simplicity of your user interace. Docking/undocking of dialogs is just as it should be. Drawing just feels right. The tool never gets into the way.

THANKS for this great software!

The Lock Alpha feature of the brush is useful (in fact more than just welcomed, I WAS WAITING FOR IT!), however I do hope that it can be improved to depend on the arrangement of layers, something that Photoshop and a certain drawing program (Paint Tool SAI) has an advantage on this (probably some others do have it too).

E.g.: You put a set of colors on one layer., then you make a new layer on top of it and use Lock Alpha to paint on it, which ensures any changes you make on that layer is only visible on the non-transparent areas defined by the previous layer.

Hi, just wanted to ask a few things concerning mypaint.
Ever since I downloaded the new version when it came out it was working very well for me, but recently these couple of days I was drawing something on it for a contest entry, and MyPaint started acting slow, so I saved the picture as to not loose the work. Then after I saved it started being difficult to close the program, becoming very slow, and well after it closed. I went to look at my work by opening it in windows gallery, and the picture I worked so hard on does not want to open in any program, including MyPaint. What should I do? I really want to finish my contest picture, but it tells me it can't open in programs because it has no file type, and can not be supported... :(

MyPaint is one of the best free programs I've ever used. "My WishList": I think they should add a "symmetry" / mirror tools like the art programs "Alchemy", and SketchBook have. I also think it would AMAZING if they took MyPaint + Pencil 0.4.4b , and put then together to make the best free 2D animation program .

Depending on your operating system, chances are it might or might not be fully supported yet.

If it's Linux, last I checked (with a Wacom Bamboo Pen, which is the same as yours sans the touch function, stylus eraser and pad buttons), most Linux distributions don't have a driver for it yet in the kernel (though I'm basing that statement for an Ubuntu machine I was running at work), but as for now I haven't had any idea if they already rectified that.

This is an amazing release, I am thrilled with the multiply layer blending and the lock alpha mode, and the lock layer possibility. It's all fabulous. (it's made digital watercolour one notch easier).

Erm... I'd love to use this, but I can't figure out how to get 1.0.0's source code running. I probably sound kind of stupid, but I'm not good at stuff like this. I'm running a Windows 7. Could anyone help?

Uhm, why is the zoom/pan function with the scroll wheel somewhat effed up?
It works for a few seconds then it stops working.

By the way, I'm using this alongside a wacom bamboo pen tablet.

using Win7

I have the 32bit version running on my computer right now.

I am literally neglecting programs I have PAYED for for this.
The mypaint development team is amazing, you guys are constantly coming up with new things. When we ask for features, they are put in. And that win version came out SO fast :D
I honestly have nothing but praise for this project. I adore mypaint, and I hope that you continue to grow in the artistic community. I tell everyone about this program <3
MyPaint forever~

Have you tried downloading the Windows version and running it under WINE? I did that with .09 and it works fine.

I also tried that in Ubuntu Studio 11.0 and it works.

Thanks for the advice, I also tried to compile GTK ;) but I think I'll draw a little more and spend less time trying to tweak and almost break what's currently working ... just for a new version - 0.9 is still pretty awesome to use, and retrospectively it's just the excitement of trying new things that got me thinking I needed to install 1.0.0 no matter what -- that's the price to pay to be a Geek

That's cool. Just putting it out as an option.

Mind you, you can install 1.0 in Wine and still have 0.9 installed in Linux. And the install took all of 3 minutes to install. Probably 5 more to install all the brushes I modded. So, it wouldn't pull off too much of your time.

But, to each their own.

LOL Me too!!!! Just got a Wacom Connect and the kernal doesn't even see the darned thing! :frustrated:

Still using my banged up old Acecad Flair II. (which is living proof that crazy glue does indeed work, cause that's what is holding the darned thing together! LOL) ;)

Oh well they'll catch up with our purchases eventually. And you're right. Just gotta wait for the updates.

Aaaah! Lock aplpha and compositing modes! I've been yearning for that =D
Although, updating to 1.0 (windows) erased my brush groups (all the additional brushes were dumped in "lost and found", and my "favorites" was empty). It seems to me that the text file that defined the groups is not used anymore. Not that big of a deal though.

Will downloading 1.0.0 affect my currect version?
like, will it update my version?

:iconairhooves:

Yes, installing will update the version you already have. It will keep your brushkits and settings, so don't be afraid of missing something. It will be there, waiting for you to use it again) Though I'm sure you will probably want to play with new settings, that's been added, and customize the program to suit your needs even better.

I haven't tried the Linux version yet, and I don't have a Mac, but, I did with Windows XP and the Windows version DOES NOT keep your brush kits. I had version 9 on my computer and it completely overwrote them. I had to reinstall both the Tone brush kit and the 08 brush kit. And it completely wiped my favorites brushes. Fortunately, I backed them up by saving them as brush kits. (paranoia can be a good thing at times)

If you want to save your brushes and settings before installing 1.0, right click on your brush kit (such as favorites) and choose Export As Brush Kit. This will save it as a zip file that you can re-import back into MyPaint after you install 1.0.

I use Windows 7 64 bit, and it saved everything as it was in brushkits...
I wouldn't name that a paranoia, it's just a common sense, and it worked for you in that situation)

Yep, mine is a 32 bit Win XP Pro, so, it probably depends on your operating system more than on the MyPaint program.

I'd advise everyone to back up their brush kits just in case unless you know for a fact the OS will save them.

That's an awesome release. New version is a huge improvements in features and design. Though it's lame that there's only 32-bit version (I have a 64-bit system) for Windows, but I hope there will be 64 soon. And there's still a glitch when sometimes mouse/stylus are not recognized after switching between each other.
Anyway, great job! Thanks to everyone who developed it!
