Hey everybody,

just wanted to let you know that I renamed "Landscape and Still Life" to "Landscape and Inanimate Objects" because we have been getting lots of submissions to this category which actually are paintings of animate - i.e. alive - beings.
(Which is not a problem at all, because we can easily move those paintings to the appropriate folder, but it is a rather tedious task).

So, don't let me further disturb you, go ahead an paint! :)

Links 'n' stuff..

MyPaint is at On the front page, there's links to download the program for both Linux and Windows, as well as links to related projects.

There's a bunch of MyPaint Tutorials on the MyPaint Resources page, and there might be even more on the Wiki or in the Forum.

Also, be sure to checkout Deevad's very cool time-lapse video showing his use of MyPaint.

Trying out MyPaint. What a great tool! Love the original concepts like picking the layer/brush settings. Infinite canvas and such.. But I am missing couple of features, which I either didn't found are lacking but would make a huge difference.

1. Some sort of layer thumbnails. (Can it be turned on? couldn't find it) Without some kind of visual reminder,  keeping track what is in which layer becomes a hard task.

2. As far as I get it there is no way to set up a keyboard shortcut for Layer Blend Mode menu. Neither Krita, nor ArtRage (not sure about Photoshop) have this but this would mean a world to me, and every one of us who paint with light and shadow, using Multiply and Add modes (or what ever it is called) Coming from video Compositing and 3d Layer blending modes are very important to my workflow. Any chance we could at least get this so it can be accessed via shortcut?

3. Did I miss it, or the cursor does not follow the increase of brush size pass a certain size?, also some kind of visual cue about the brush orientation, and correct visual representation of brush size on the cursor, would be really important. Krita does this really well.

4. Some simple transformation tool would be reeaaaaaly useful, for quick fixing the proportions and scales, as one user already said.

5. on windows 7 64bit GUI has some quirks which turn up quite often, like, buttons stop reacting to tablet/mouse, Keyboard works , and Esc brings everything back to normal. In full-screen panel-less mode side panels return to being hidden rather irregularly

These five things would make MyPaint the best and fastest drawing software at least for me.
Any hope these are planned features, or even better did I miss some of those actually already existing?

Is there a possibility for MyPaint becoming a mobile app as well? :? It be great to have it on the go. :) All my drawings start on Mypaint usually, before I finish them somewhere else, plus if I get a sudden idea, I'd like to have it on the go. lol. ^^;

Hi!! I know you guys probably get a lot of questions like this, but I seem to be having a problem with the MyPaint program. I have a finished piece under ORA(OpenRanster Image) and when I tried to upload it to Deviantart, it just rejected it and said that could not find the file. Has this ever happened before? If so could you please tell me on how to solve it?? I would be very grateful if you find the time to help me!! I really want to start uploading ditigal art!!

Thank youDepressed

deviantArt does not accept files in ORA file format; you have to export your image to either jpg or png

An ORA file is a zip archive with PNG files inside. One PNG for each layer in your image. It's a rather uncommon file format, so Deviant Art doesn't recognize it.

To save your image in a format that Deviant Art will recognize, add a file extension such as .jpg or .png when you save your file.

ex: MySuperduperDrawing.jpg or MySuperduperDrawing.png

You will lose the layers by doing so, but there's nothing stopping you from saving the file as both .ora and some other format.

Thank you so much for the advice!!! But, I am still having trouble with understanding it.... What do you mean by "add file extension". I renamed the file and added .jpg ,but deviantart still didn't recognized it... Was I supposed to do something else? Sorry if I'm bothering you too much!!! Llama Emoji-06 (Depress) [V1] but I sill need a little more help... Thank you for helping me so far though!! Bunny Emoji-87 (Thanks) [V5]

You can't just rename your file, you have to name your file "myfile.jpg" when you are saving it in Mypaint.

1. Open myfile.ora in Mypaint
2. File -> Save As -> myfile.jpg

The only thing that's bothering me is that you apologize for asking. ;)

quick question: is there a random folder or something for items that don't fit in any of the other categories/ if your not sure which one it should go in?

Hi there. :)
Since I have a new computer, I downloaded MyPaint again and discovered the 1.2 beta version. So after testing it a bit, I thought to leave you some feedback.
I come from version 1.0 (I'm a Windows user), so the new features of 1.1 weere new to me as well and I won't distinguiush between them. My review also won't cover up everything.

I think my first reaction after opening the new MyPaint was squealing at my monitor or something like that. It looks really nice and polished. I like that you used a slightly coloured background, it's very appealing to the eye.
The feature I was the most excited for is gamut mapping. I just love it and haven't seen it in any other program.
The colour mixer is great, too and it's nice that you included a symmetry mode.
What I liked better in version 1.0 is the brush panel. When I want to have all brushes at hand, I either have to click through the categories or put the dockers into different places and let them take a lot of space. All in all the old workspace appeared much tidier to me. I only had the brush and the layer panel open (and perhaps the scratchpad), now I need two bars. A downside that comes with new features, I guess.
Which brings me to another topic. The feature I always missed the most is selection and transformation (just some simple moving, scaling and rotating to fix proportions). I understand that you want to keep the program simple and appreciate the philosophy. But then I don't get the tons of layer blending modes you included by now. Maybe I just have different priorities.
Another thing that annoyed me were the changes in the shortcuts. But I can change these. What I cannot change is space used as right mouse button (or can I?). I'm used to use it for panning, like in any other graphic software I know. I also cannot use the right mouse button like before, because MyPaint now has an actual context menu.
I noticed that you included a scrolling multitouch gesture next to zooming. Though the two are switched and I can only scroll up and down, I'm glad to see you working on this.

My last point is just to say thank you to all developers. While I critisized a few things, I still think you are doing awesome work!
